Biography

Jarek Szlichta is an Associate Professor at the Lassonde School of Engineering, York University, and is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Waterloo. He is a Faculty Fellow at the IBM Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS) and serves as the co-director of the Data & AI Lab. His research interests focus on data science with a special emphasis on data-driven systems, large-scale machine learning, and responsible artificial intelligence to obtain trustworthy insights from data. Szlichta has been recognized for his contributions, notably receiving the IBM CAS Faculty of the Year Award for optimizing the IBM Db2 system using machine learning and for his work at the CeBIT computer expo, which earned a Business Award for the OCEAN GenRap analytic reporting tool. He has secured research grants from government bodies like NSERC and MITACS and industry partners including IBM and AT&T. Szlichta earned his PhD from York University and has spent three years as a student fellow at IBM CAS, where he was awarded the IBM Research Student Year Award. He was also a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Toronto.
