Biography

Jarrett Welsh earned a Bachelor of Arts in Classics from Davidson College and completed his PhD at Harvard University. He has been a faculty member at the University of Toronto since 2009, where he is a member of the Centre for Medieval Studies and University College. Professor Welsh's primary research interests lie in the areas of Republican Latin literature and culture, particularly in the study of comedy and fragmentary texts. His scholarly work has focused on the methods of ancient scholars, particularly in the editing of fragmentary texts from the imperial period, including lexicographical treatises, grammars, and commentaries. He aims to complete a long-standing project on editing and commenting on the remains of Latin fabulae togatae. Additionally, he has developed a critical interest in the 'indirect' transmission of texts, sparked by a skepticism towards traditional means of persuasion. Welsh's ongoing projects engage with the textual traditions of figures such as Festus, Paulus Diaconus, Asconius, Nonius Marcellus, and Rutilius Lupus. He regularly teaches courses on Roman comedy and satire, and offers graduate reading and research courses in these areas, fostering a collaborative learning environment for students.
