Dr. Jaś Elsner

Biography

Jaś Elsner is a Senior Research Fellow at Corpus Christi College, University of Oxford, specializing in Roman art, archaeology, and architecture. He has a strong academic background with qualifications including a BA Hons from Cambridge, MA from Cambridge, MA from London, and a PhD from Cambridge. His research interests encompass Greek, Roman, and early Christian Byzantine art and archaeology, with an emphasis on the reception of material culture, texts, and museums collecting. He also explores the intersections of art and religion, as well as the history of art history and archaeology, including themes of pilgrimage. His educational and professional training includes prestigious institutions such as Cambridge, Harvard, and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. Elsner has contributed significantly to the field through numerous publications and research projects, focusing on classical and late antique art, reception of ancient art, and the concept of ekphrasis.
