Biography

Jason M. Brown was born and raised in Southern California where he studied anthropology and international development as an undergraduate at Brigham Young University. He moved to Vancouver, BC in 2013 and became a Canadian citizen in 2024. He earned joint master’s degrees in forestry and theology from Yale University and completed his PhD in 2017 from the Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability at the University of British Columbia. His dissertation research, which focused on the sense of place and attachment to land among contemporary Catholic monks in the American West, was published as 'Dwelling in the Wilderness: Modern Monks of the American West' in 2024. As a Lecturer in Religious Studies at Simon Fraser University, he teaches courses that explore religion and ecological humanities. Brown piloted an ecological chaplaincy program at Simon Fraser University in 2023, which is a joint partnership with the Faculty of Environment and the Multifaith Centre, aimed at integrating contemplative practices to build resilience against climate anxiety and ecological grief.
