Jason Colby grew up in Victoria and spent most of his time in the Seattle area of Washington State. After completing high school, he worked as a commercial fisherman in Alaska and at fish farms in Puget Sound. He studied overseas in Central America before he entered graduate school. Colby taught history in English in Taiwan and worked at a land-use law firm in Seattle while traveling across the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. He earned his PhD from Cornell University in 2005 and taught at the University of Texas at El Paso before joining the University of Victoria in 2007. His teaching and writing focus on marine environmental history and international history, with a particular interest in the historical interactions between humans and whales along the Pacific Coast. His recent book examines the transformation of human relations with killer whales from the 1960s to the present and discusses the impact of regional and global environmental values and policies. He is currently researching new book projects funded by an SSHRC Insight Grant, one titled "Devilfish: The History and Future of Gray Whales and People."
