Biography

Jason Demers is an Associate Professor at the University of Regina, specializing in English Creative Writing. His research interests primarily focus on the intersection of communication, culture, and politics, particularly within the context of prison writing, narrative aspects of law, security, and surveillance. He teaches courses that explore themes of prison writing, graphic novels, and the strategic use of social communication networks. Demers has published extensively, including his book 'American Politics French Theory' (2019), which examines the connections between French philosophy and American countercultures, and 'Life Sentence: Rik McWhinney' (2022), a compilation of writings and interviews with a man who served life sentences in Canada’s penitentiary system. His current research includes a SSHRC-funded project on prison tourism and the penal press in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, which aims to provide insights into the discursive construction of prisoners and the memorialization of punishment in the province. Demers is also actively recruiting honors graduate students who share his interests in prison writing and related fields.
