Dr. Jason Hartwig

Biography

Jason Hartwig is a Lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Yale University. His research focuses on armed conflict, identity, intervention, and state-building, with an emphasis on the micro-foundations of conflict governance. He is currently working on a book project that examines the construction of security orders in civil wars and the interaction between combatant territorial control and social cohesion, particularly in how communities manage communal violence. His research has published findings on the unintended consequences of interventions in Somalia and their effect on communal violence in the Journal of Peace Research. Jason received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania and has previously served as an armor officer in the U.S. Army. He has extensive experience in civilian security sector reform positions and has conducted fieldwork in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia.
