Biography

Professor Jason Kovacic is the Executive Director of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Western Australia. He graduated from the University of Melbourne Medical School in 1994 and subsequently undertook his residency in cardiology, specializing in interventional cardiology at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney. In 2003, he became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. He completed his PhD in cardiovascular medicine at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute. In 2007, he was elected a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and subsequently relocated to the USA, where he worked with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. During his time at NIH, he made significant discoveries regarding critical pathways leading to blockages in the body's blood vessels and has continued to focus on innovative methods to prevent and treat vascular disease. In addition to his research, Professor Kovacic is a clinical cardiologist specializing in vascular conditions, particularly in the context of heart artery blockages. He has authored numerous scientific and clinical papers regarding heart and vascular health and is actively involved in various NIH committees with a particular interest in the pathobiology of vascular diseases. He is also noted for his achievements as an elite athlete and world-class rower, along with skills in classical guitar and proficiency in multiple languages.
