Biography

Jason Nieh is a professor at Columbia University in the Department of Computer Science, where he co-directs the Software Systems Laboratory. He is also a chief scientist at CertiK and has served as a consultant and technical advisor for various organizations, including Microsoft and the U.S. International Trade Commission. Nieh has authored hundreds of peer-reviewed papers across a broad range of areas including operating systems, virtualization, computer architecture, thin-client computing, cloud computing, mobile computing, computer security, formal verification, multimedia, web technologies, and performance evaluation. His developed technologies are widely used in major operating system platforms such as Android and Linux, as well as in large cloud service providers including Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association for Computing Machinery, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and has received several awards for his research work, including the Sigma Xi Young Investigator Award and the National Science Foundation CAREER Award. As a dedicated teacher, he has received the Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award for his innovations in teaching operating systems, using virtualization as a pedagogical tool. His educational background includes a B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and both an M.S. and Ph.D. from Stanford University, all in Electrical Engineering.
