Biography

Jason Olsthoorn is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Queen's University. His research focuses on fluid dynamics, particularly in the context of sediment transport and environmental mixing processes. Olsthoorn’s work employs a multidisciplinary approach, integrating mathematical modeling, laboratory measurements, and numerical simulations to understand and address challenges in fluid mechanics. His current research examines physical processes in lakes and similar oceanographic systems, which are critical for maintaining sustainable water resources. His investigations into winter mixing processes reveal key insights into brine rejection and cold-water convection in ice-covered lakes. With a strong foundation in data science, Olsthoorn uses innovative techniques for data assimilation to bridge gaps in existing field studies. He is passionate about mentoring and is currently looking for graduate students and undergraduate research assistants to join his team.
