Biography

Jason Shields is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Interior Design at the University of Manitoba. In 2018, he was selected as one of Interior Design Canada's PROpel program top 20 emerging design professionals in Canada. His work experience in the professional industry allows him to take a multi-faceted approach to research and design methodologies. Primarily, Jason explores the relationship between architecture, technology, and the built environment. His current research examines the roles of Virtual Reality (VR), Mixed Reality (MR), and AI-generated virtual environments in interior design. He instructs both undergraduate and graduate courses in interior design studio that require the production of contemporary building typologies utilizing advanced technologies, including reactive architectural installations that incorporate microprocessors. Jason has received peer-reviewed Innovative Teaching Idea Awards from the Interior Design Educators Council in 2020, 2021, and 2023. Beyond design, his passions include film, photography, digital archivism, and sound production.
