Biography

Jason Stanley is a philosopher whose work spans philosophy of language, epistemology, linguistics, cognitive science, and social and political philosophy. He serves as the Bissell-Heyd Associates Chair in American Studies at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy and is a Distinguished Professor at the Kyiv School of Economics. Prior to his appointment at the University of Toronto in 2025, he was a Professor of Philosophy at Yale University from 2013 to 2025, and held faculty positions at Rutgers University, the University of Michigan, and Cornell University. Stanley is the author of seven books and numerous scholarly articles across multiple disciplines. Notable works include 'Knowledge Practical Interests,' which won the American Philosophical Association Book Prize in 2007, and 'Propaganda Works,' which received the 2016 PROSE Award in Philosophy. His writings have also appeared in major publications such as the New York Guardian and the Washington Post, where he addresses themes of authoritarianism, propaganda, and democracy. His books have been translated into 30 languages, advocating for important social issues like mass incarceration in the United States.
