Dr. Jason Stanyek

Biography

Professor Jason Stanyek is a notable figure in the field of ethnomusicology, currently serving as an Associate Professor and Fellow Tutor at St. John's College, University of Oxford since October 2012. His research encompasses various aspects of Brazilian music, sound studies, and music technology, with particular interests in hip hop and intercultural improvisation. He has published extensively, including co-editing the 'Oxford Handbook of Mobile Music Studies' and contributing seminal essays recognized by the Association for Theatre in Higher Education. He has held teaching positions at prestigious institutions including New York University, the University of Richmond, and has been a Visiting Associate Professor at Harvard University. Stanyek has also been involved in significant collaborative projects, including an international research initiative on improvisation funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. His contributions to music education have been recognized with teaching awards at the University of California, San Diego, and he continues to influence students with graduate and undergraduate seminars on Brazilian music, critical theory, and the African diaspora.
