Biography

Jason Torres is a Senior Genetic Epidemiologist at the University of Oxford's Medical Sciences Division. He leads genetic analyses for the Mexico City Prospective Study, focusing on large-scale genetic data including genome-wide arrays and whole genome sequencing (WGS). His research primarily addresses the identification of genetic risk factors for complex diseases such as type 2 diabetes and related cardiometabolic traits. By utilizing fine-mapping data and integrative methods, Jason elucidates the underlying biological processes that mediate genetic susceptibility to disease onset and progression. Additionally, he leverages genetic information to construct and evaluate polygenic risk scores, which facilitate inference regarding causal risk factors through Mendelian randomization. Jason received his PhD from the University of Chicago, where he conducted extensive genome-wide association studies and heritability estimation. After joining Oxford Population Health, he worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Wellcome Centre for Human Genetics, focusing on the integration of genetic fine-mapping data with functional genomic and molecular epigenomic features to resolve causal genes in relevant tissues and loci associated with type 2 diabetes.
