Biography

Jasper Smits is a courtesy professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Dell Medical School, University of Texas at Austin. He received his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and completed a clinical internship at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital. Smits has worked as a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at Southern Methodist University for nine years before joining the Department of Psychology at UT Austin in 2013. His research program aims to improve treatment for anxiety disorders, including social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as related problems like smoking, overeating, and physical inactivity. Using a translational research approach, his laboratory studies aim to identify targets for intervention, develop and pilot test novel therapeutic strategies, and examine the efficacy of promising behavioral integrative treatments in clinical trials.
