Biography

Jasper van Vliet is an Associate Professor at the Institute for Environmental Studies at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His research focuses on land use change and urban development processes, examining their social and environmental impacts across various scales from local to global. He employs a diverse range of methodological approaches such as case studies, systematic reviews, spatial analysis, and land use modeling. He is the program director of the Bachelor in Earth, Economics, and Sustainability, and teaches courses on Geographic Information Systems (GIS), land use change, and urban development. He regularly supervises related thesis projects. Currently, he leads significant projects including UNSEAL, aimed at enhancing understanding of soil unsealing processes to create new urban biodiversity spaces, and RUGBIS, which investigates sustainable densification in cities of the Global South. His work has received funding from notable sources including the European program Driving Urban Transitions and the NWO Netherlands Scientific Organization. He holds a PhD in Geo-Information Science from Wageningen University and has a strong record of publications and collaborations in his field.
