Javaid Sheikh is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University and an Emeritus Faculty member. His research primarily focuses on the phenomenology and vulnerability factors associated with psychiatric conditions, particularly medical comorbidity, panic disorder in older adults, and treatment responses in this demographic. He has dedicated a significant period to studying Late-Onset Panic Disorder (LOPD), which is characterized by an onset age of 55, and has worked to establish it as a phenomenologically distinct syndrome in comparison to Early-Onset Panic Disorder (EOPD). His extensive research involves comparisons between LOPD and EOPD subjects using multiple standardized measures to evaluate phenomenology and vulnerability factors. In addition to this, he has conducted pilot studies that explore both pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatment strategies for panic disorder among older individuals. Currently, he is planning a large-scale study that will assess the efficacy of different treatment approaches for panic disorder in older adults, and he is also involved in a pilot project investigating the phenomenology and treatment of anxiety in older Asian-Americans.
