Biography

Javed Mostafa is a professor and the dean of the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on multimedia information retrieval, personalization, user modeling, cyberinfrastructure, and learning. Mostafa joined the University of Toronto in September 2023, after serving as a professor and the founding director of the Carolina Health Informatics Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During his time at UNC, he oversaw collaborations across seven academic units. Prior to that, he was at Indiana University, Bloomington, where he held the Victor H. Yngve Endowed Professorship and served as associate dean for academics and associate dean for research. Mostafa completed his PhD in information science at the University of Texas at Austin in 1994, focusing on developing information query models and search interfaces for video information.
