Biography

Jay Ague is a Henry Barnard Davis Memorial Professor in the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences at Yale University and Curator-in-Charge of Mineralogy at the Yale Peabody Museum. His research focuses on fluid flow, chemical reactions, mass transfer, and heat transfer in the Earth's crust and upper mantle, with an emphasis on metamorphic and igneous rocks that comprise the deep roots of mountain belts. Ague's research group integrates fieldwork with chemical isotopic analyses of rocks and minerals, as well as numerical simulations. His notable research areas include thermobarometry, heat and mass transport in porous fractured rock, and understanding the timescales of orogenic events. He has also investigated the impact of subsurface fluids on rock rheology related to earthquake hazards and has contributed to studies on geohydrology and the genesis of economic mineral deposits. Throughout his career, Ague has led and participated in geological research expeditions across diverse locations worldwide, including British Columbia, California, Greece, Italy, New England, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Scotland, South Africa, Spitzbergen, and Washington State. He serves as a Senior Editor for the American Journal of Science and is involved with several editorial boards, including Chemical Geology and the Journal of Metamorphic Geology, as well as the American Journal of Science.
