Dr. Jay Gottfried

Biography

The Gottfried Laboratory focuses on deciphering how the human sense of smell influences behavior across various levels, from cellular to network. Utilizing human psychophysics, task-based functional MRI, and advanced machine learning models, the lab explores the complexities of the human olfactory system. Collaborating closely with Departments of Neurology, Psychology, Bioengineering, and Otorhinolaryngology, the lab investigates fundamental questions concerning odor processing. The lab is committed to fostering a diverse research environment and frequently recruits Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows from interdisciplinary backgrounds, including biology, chemistry, neuroscience, psychology, mathematics, and engineering. As an integral part of the broader neuroscience community at the University of Pennsylvania, the Gottfried Lab uniquely contributes to the understanding of how olfactory stimuli shape cognitive and behavioral responses, paving the way for new insights into sensory integration and perception.
