Biography

Jay Gottfried is the Arthur H. Rubenstein University Professor in the Department of Neurology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. His research primarily focuses on the human brain's transformation of olfactory inputs into perceptual representations and how learning and memory modulate information to enhance odor object recognition and discrimination at behavioral, cognitive, and neural levels. He has a background in Molecular Biology, earning his Bachelor's degree from Princeton University in 1989, followed by an MD from New York University in 1997 and a PhD in Physiology/Neuroscience. His postdoctoral training included being an HHMI Physician-Scientist Fellow specializing in Olfactory Neuroscience at University College London. Gottfried's work bridges various themes, encompassing molecular and cellular analysis of human olfactory tissue, vivo electrophysiological analysis with intracranial EEG, and systems-level analysis through functional MRI and olfactory psychophysics involving both human subjects and mice. His lab's mission is to connect the fundamental mechanisms of olfaction with broader neuroscientific inquiries that address health and disease. He is board certified in Psychiatry and Neurology from 2003 and 2013.
