Biography

Jay Grossman (Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania) teaches and writes about eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American literature and culture, focusing particularly on figures such as Emerson and Whitman. His publication 'Reconstituting American Renaissance: Emerson, Whitman, Politics Representation' was released by Duke University Press in Spring 2003. Additionally, he co-edited 'Breaking Bounds: Whitman and American Cultural Studies' with Betsy Erkkila, published by Oxford in 1996. Grossman's current research involves the cultural biography of literary critic and political activist F. O. Matthiessen, with fellowship support from Yale University's Beinecke Library and the ACLS in 2002-03 as a Visiting Scholar at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His scholarly work includes contributions to several journals with pieces examining canonicity and the interplay between canon, gender, and sexuality in American literature. His specializations include History, Book/Material Texts, American Literature from 1900 onwards, and Gender & Sexuality Studies.
