Biography

Jay Scherer is a Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, Recreation at the University of Alberta. He has been a faculty member since 2005, specializing in sport sociology. Scherer holds a PhD in Sport Sociology from the University of Otago, completed in 2004, as well as a Master’s in Sport Management from the University of Windsor. He teaches undergraduate courses on socio-cultural aspects of sport and leisure, and a graduate seminar focused on current issues in sport. His research interests include the social implications of sport, particularly the displacement phases experienced by Afghan refugees in sports and physical culture, and the intersection of urban politics and major sports facilities, among other topics. He has published numerous articles and book chapters reflecting his diverse interests in sports sociology and its role within Canadian society.
