Biography

Jay Whitacre is a Trustee Professor at Carnegie Mellon University, holding a joint appointment in the Departments of Engineering and Public Policy, and Materials Science Engineering. His research focuses on materials science, particularly the synthesis, characterization, and implementation of promising materials and device architectures for energy storage and generation technologies including lithium-ion batteries, fuel cells, and photovoltaics. He also addresses the policy implications of selecting and implementing renewable technologies. Whitacre's research includes hybrid power systems, distributed mobile platforms, high-throughput materials selection methods, and ultra-fast laser modification of materials for solid-state electrochemical devices. He has authored or co-authored over 60 peer-reviewed papers and is an inventor on 30 issued and pending patents. His work has received numerous accolades, including the 2014 Caltech/Resnick Sustainability Institute Resonate Award and being named one of the top 25 Eco-Innovators in the world by Fortune Magazine. He was also the recipient of the 2015 $500,000 Lemelson-MIT Prize for Innovation.
