Biography

Jaydev P. Desai is a Professor and BME Distinguished Faculty Fellow at the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech. He also holds a courtesy appointment at the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering. He serves as the Director of the Georgia Center for Medical Robotics and as the Associate Director of the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Machines. Desai completed his undergraduate studies at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, in 1993 and went on to earn his M.A. in Mathematics in 1997, as well as his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering Applied Mechanics in 1995 and 1998, respectively, from the University of Pennsylvania. He has held a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University. Desai has received numerous awards, including NIH R01 grants, the NSF CAREER award, and the Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award. He is also an invited speaker for the National Academy of Sciences’ 'Distinctive Voices' seminar series and has attended the National Academy of Engineering’s U.S. Frontiers in Engineering Symposium. With over 160 publications, he is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Medical Robotics Research and Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopedia of Medical Robotics. His research interests focus on image-guided surgical robotics, rehabilitation robotics, cancer diagnosis at the micro-scale, and grasping.
