Biography

Jayeeta Sharma is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Toronto. She holds an affiliated position with the Global Asia Studies Program, Asian Institute, and the Diaspora Transnational Program at the same university. She is an active member of the editorial collective for the journal Radical History Review and serves as a series editor for the Empires Perspective book series at Pickering & Chatto Press. Born in Assam, Jayeeta obtained her BA, MA, and M.Phil from the University of Delhi and completed her PhD at Cambridge University under a Commonwealth Scholarship. She has served as an Assistant Professor at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Western Ontario before joining the faculty at Toronto. Her research interests encompass migration, labor, family, gender, food, and cultural circulation, particularly in relation to the Eastern Himalayan borderlands, British Empire, and post-colonial contexts. Her acclaimed book, Empire’s Garden: Assam Making India, delves into the intersections of colonial tea capitalism and identity contestations in modern India. Her current research explores themes of labor mobilization, interpersonal relationships, and education across diverse locations, including Darjeeling and Kalimpong.
