Biography

Jayne Parker is an artist and filmmaker whose work has been widely shown in major art institutions and film festivals both nationally and internationally. She was the recipient of the 1871 Fellowship in 2003, where she researched the relationship between music and film at the Ruskin School of Drawing, Oxford, and the San Francisco Art Institute. Her work often involves a focus on the structural rigor of music as it relates to film. In 2008, she completed 'Trilogy: Kettle's Yard', which premiered at the 52nd London Film Festival and was funded in part by an AHRC Small Award. Parker has also presented retrospectives of her films at the BFI Southbank, celebrating the legacy of American filmmaker Maya Deren. With a commitment to 16mm film, her art intertwines the physical aspects of materiality with music, often exploring the performative act of musicians through the lens of film. She has been teaching at the Slade School of Fine Art since 1989, and she has held various solo and group exhibitions, showcasing her unique approach to combining film and visual art, which challenges conventional narratives and invites engagement with the medium itself.
