Biography

JD Fleming's work focuses on the history and philosophy of Western science and technology during the early-modern period (1500-1700). He aims to reveal how modern intellectual norms and ways of thinking emerged from surprising sources in this period. In 2011, he co-founded the international conference series Scientiae: Disciplines Knowing Early Modern World with Steven Matthews from the University of Minnesota, organizing the inaugural conference at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver in spring 2012. He also organized the 2019 Scientiae conference held at Queen's University, Belfast. Fleming's selected publications include books such as 'Timothie Bright Origins Early Modern Shorthand: Melancholy, Medicines, Information Soul' (Routledge, 2024), 'Mirror Information Early Modern England: John Wilkins Universal Character' (Palgrave, 2017), and 'Invention Discovery, 1500-1700' (Ashgate, 2011) among others.
