Biography

Jean-Bernard Martens is a Full Professor specializing in Visual Interaction at the Eindhoven University of Technology. His research primarily focuses on developing and testing new augmented-reality interaction styles while emphasizing the importance of visual materials. He is the chairman of the ID Board of Examiners and serves as a board member for the Eindhoven Museum. Martens is deeply interested in providing tools and methods that support designers in creating interactive intelligent systems. He has co-developed methods for storytelling and studying user experience over time, along with software tools for crafting animations and interactive prototypes in an intuitive (designerly) manner. He holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the State University of Ghent, Belgium, which he completed in 1979, and earned his PhD in 1984, with resulting papers receiving recognition from the IEEE for contributions in the area of Signal Processing. He joined the Institute for Perception Research (IPO) at Eindhoven University of Technology in the same year, progressed to Associate Professor in 1990, and became a Full Professor in the field of Visual Interaction in 2003. Martens has authored significant works in Image Technology Design and Interactive Statistics and has co-edited publications on Collaboration in Creative Design.
