Sociologist and criminologist by training, Jean-François Cauchie is a full professor in the Department of Criminology. His research focuses on three axes: 1) Issues surrounding the evolution of criminal law and the emergence, selection, and stabilization of innovative ideas in legal punishment. 2) Epistemological, ethical, and methodological issues surrounding the creation of a digital database informing on the management of suicidal acts in Quebec from 1763 to 2021. 3) Issues around two poorly delineated research objects, the posthumous self as derived from letters (sometimes misnamed) of farewell and suicide as a transdisciplinary object. He is currently the principal investigator of a SSHRC grant (2020-2025) titled 'Beyond Life: Understanding the Suicidal Acts of Quebecers from Their Letters of Farewell (1919-2021).' Co-researchers are Patrice Corriveau and Isabelle Perreault.
