Biography

Jean-Francois Richer is a nationally and internationally recognized specialist in 19th-century French literature, particularly known for his work on the novelist Honoré de Balzac. He has published two single-author books and twenty articles, and has presented fifty academic papers across Canada, the United States, France, England, and Germany. In 2014, he received the ACEF-XIX award for 'Best Article in 19th Century French Studies'. His teaching experience spans junior, senior, and graduate courses in institutions in Montreal, Baltimore, and Calgary. He has received multiple teaching awards, including the prestigious 'University of Calgary Teaching Award for Full-Time Faculty' in 2020 and the 'Student Union Teaching Excellence Award' in 2019. Richer has served as the Department Head of French, Italian, and Spanish, and as Director of the French Centre, chairing the Division of French from 2021 to 2024. He is also the President of the national association ACEF-XIX.
