Biography

Professor Jean-Marc Barreau has been engaged in academic and clinical practices for a decade, primarily focusing on palliative care and spiritual accompaniment. He has worked at various institutions, including Hôpital Villa Medica and Hôpital Marie-Clarac, where he specialized in supporting patients in palliative care and their caregivers. His research methodology is rooted in action research, having obtained a Doctorate from Université de Montréal, where he developed expertise in how spiritual anthropologies shape human practices. Since June 2020, he has been a member of the Université de Montréal and has established a research fund dedicated to grief and its accompaniment. He currently leads several research projects that examine the impact of grief, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects on mourning processes. His contributions extend to forming the next generation of spiritual care providers through the Spirituality and Health program. Professor Barreau has received awards for his interdisciplinary teaching and impactful research in grief and palliative care and continues to play a vital role in advancing the understanding of spiritual care in end-of-life settings.
