Jean-Michaël Lavoie has pursued an international career as a conductor since the age of 28. After completing his studies at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, he became assistant conductor of the Ensemble intercontemporain in Paris from 2008 to 2010, and one of the resident conductors with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2010. He has continued his musical training in Europe and the United States with prominent figures like Pierre Boulez, Susanna Mälkki, and Esa-Pekka Salonen. Over the past decade, he has collaborated with notable orchestras across Europe, such as the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. His operatic debut was at Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 2011. Lavoie is also a faculty member at the University of Montreal's Faculty of Music, where he leads and teaches contemporary music programs from bachelor’s to doctorate levels, thus shaping the next generation of musicians. He will succeed Lorraine Vaillancourt as the artistic and musical director of the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne starting in the 2024-2025 season.
