Biography

Jean-Michel Maarek received an engineering degree in Chemical Engineering from École des Mines de Nancy, France, in 1980, and a Doctorate in Biomedical Engineering from Université Paris Val-de-Marne in 1984. He joined the University of Southern California in 1984 as a Research Associate and became a Research Assistant Professor in 1987, followed by his appointment as an Assistant Professor in Biomedical Engineering in 1993. His research focuses primarily on biomechanics of pulmonary circulation and biomedical optics, particularly in developing diagnostic technologies like optical biopsy for critical care medicine. His current work involves laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy for identifying and characterizing atherosclerotic lesions, analyzing the spectral and temporal characteristics of fluorescent light from arterial tissue excited by nanosecond laser pulses. Additionally, he is interested in Engineering Education, particularly in enhancing teaching and learning through the use of information technology in undergraduate classrooms.
