Jean-Philippe Avouac is the Earle C. Anthony Professor of Geology at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where he has served since 2012. He was previously a Professor at Caltech from 2003 to 2011 and has held various leadership roles, including Director of the Tectonic Observatory and Associate Director of the Center for Autonomous Systems Technologies. Avouac's academic background includes a Master’s degree from Ecole Polytechnique in 1987 and a Ph.D. from Institut de Physique du Globe in 1991. His research primarily focuses on geomechanics, seismology, geodesy, and remote sensing, particularly in understanding earthquakes and crustal deformation. His current projects involve seismic mountain-building processes in the Himalayas, as well as the dynamics of fault slips and probabilistic forecasting of ground deformation in the context of subsurface engineering. Avouac employs field observations and geodetic measurements to develop kinematic and dynamic models that inform theoretical frameworks in these areas.
Most Caltech graduate programs are PhD-only. GRE General and Subject tests vary by department; many have made them optional or no longer accept them.
