Biography

Jean-Philippe Lessard is a Professor in the Biology Department at Concordia University. He holds a PhD from the University of Tennessee and has completed postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Copenhagen's Center for Macroecology, Evolution, and Climate, and at McGill University’s Quebec Center for Biodiversity Sciences. His research focuses on understanding the ecological and evolutionary drivers of biological diversity on Earth. Through the use of concepts and tools from community ecology and biogeography, he seeks to gain a mechanistic understanding of the emergence, distribution, and maintenance of diversity. This involves conducting observational and experimental field studies, as well as compiling comprehensive databases that encompass species distributions, ecological characteristics, and evolutionary histories. He teaches courses such as 'Communities and Ecosystems' and 'Field Ecology'. Lessard has published extensively, contributing to various high-impact journals and collaborating with both students and fellow researchers in the field.
