Jean-Philippe Theurillat studied medicine at the University of Zurich and received his federal diploma in human medicine in 1999. He specialized in internal medicine and surgical pathology at the University Hospital Zurich (CHUV) in Lausanne, where he obtained his board certificate in pathology in 2007. In 2008, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow under Prof. Wilhelm Krek at ETH, exploring molecular mechanisms behind novel oncogenes involved in ovarian and liver cancers. In 2011, he joined Prof. Levi Garraway's research group in Boston, focusing on next-generation DNA technologies in translational oncology, particularly the functional characterization of newly identified oncogenes and tumor suppressors in prostate cancer. In 2014, he received a professorship grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation, allowing him to further his studies at IOR, focusing on genetically defined subtypes of prostate cancer. His research aims to elucidate the biological functions of new mutations and develop innovative therapeutic strategies. His work has been recognized with awards such as the Pfizer Research Prize for Oncology in 2012 and the Astellas Award in 2017. Currently, as a tenured professor at the new biomedical faculty of Università della Svizzera italiana, his research group is investigating new drivers of prostate cancer, aiming to develop small molecule-based therapies for advanced disease.
