Biography

Jean Lachapelle is an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Montreal. Previously, he served as an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Oslo from 2021 to 2022. He has also been a researcher at the Varieties Democracy (V-Dem) Institute at the University of Gothenburg from 2019 to 2021, a postdoctoral researcher at the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies at the University of Michigan from 2017 to 2019, and a predoctoral fellow at the Middle East Initiative at Harvard University from 2014 to 2015. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Toronto. His research focuses on the politics of authoritarian regimes, state violence, and democratization. He is currently writing a book that explores the link between repression and authoritarian resilience, which is based on field studies conducted in Egypt and the Middle East. His work on coups d'état, revolutions, democratic erosion, and politics in the Middle East and North Africa has been published in journals such as Journal of Democracy, Journal of Politics, World Politics, Comparative Politics, Social Science Medicine, and International Political Science Review.
