Dr. Jean Leclerc

Biography

Jean Leclerc specializes in French literature of the seventeenth century, focusing on comic genres, aesthetics and poetics of burlesque, rhetoric, and the history of emotions and sociability. He earned his Ph.D. from Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM) and Paris-Sorbonne in 2005. His current project explores the concept of speaking about others in the era of politeness, supported by a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). He has published several critical editions and anthologies, including 'Le burlesque selon les Perrault' and has contributed articles to numerous scholarly volumes concerning the nuances of burlesque poetry and its relation to 17th-century literature. He is involved with several learned societies, serving as president of the International Center for Seventeenth Century Studies and as treasurer of the North American Society for Seventeenth Century Literature. Leclerc's work emphasizes the complexities of laughter and humor in historical contexts, advancing understanding of the cultural implications behind literary genres from this pivotal era in French literature.
