Biography

Jeanne Altmann's research focuses on life history approaches to behavioral ecology and nonexperimental research design. Her empirical work has primarily involved baboons in Amboseli National Park, Kenya, where she has conducted longitudinal studies since 1971. Altmann emphasizes an integrated, holistic approach, carrying out concurrent studies of behavior, ecology, demography, genetics, and physiology at the levels of individuals, social groups, and populations. Currently, her research centers on understanding the magnitude and sources of variability in primate life histories, parental care, and behavioral ontogeny in baboons. She analyzes the sources of variability within groups and examines patterns of stability across groups and populations over time. Her series of studies also investigate the extent to which life-history developmental parameters are influenced by food limitations and the empirical and theoretical effects of social structures on demographic processes across generations. Collaborating with various researchers, Altmann conducts studies that relate endocrine and genetic data to demographic and behavioral information about individuals in the Amboseli baboon population.
