Biography

Jeanne M. VanBriesen is the Duquesne Light Company Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University. She is also the director of the Center for Water Quality in Urban Environmental Systems (Water QUEST). VanBriesen holds a B.S. in Education, an M.S., and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Northwestern University. She is a licensed professional engineer in Delaware. Her research focuses on environmental systems, urban water system sustainability, built environment, water cycle, energy-water nexus, and watershed decision-making. VanBriesen has published more than 60 scientific articles and presented over 150 professional presentations. Her research has been funded by institutions such as the National Science Foundation and the Department of Defense. She has supervised 21 Ph.D. dissertations and six M.S. theses. VanBriesen has served on the U.S. EPA Science Advisory Board and various other boards. She is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Environmental Water Resources Institute. VanBriesen has received numerous awards including the 2015 Margaret S. Peterson Woman of the Year Award and the 2015 Carnegie Science Center Environmental Award. She has been recognized for her contributions to the field, including being a presenter for the National Academy of Engineering initiatives.
