Jeannette Hofmeijer studied Medicine at Radboud University Nijmegen and graduated with a master’s degree in Medicine with honors in 1998. She trained as a neurologist and intensive care physician at the University Medical Center Utrecht, where she also obtained her PhD in Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Imaging Spectroscopy in 2007, focusing on edema formation in cerebral ischemia. In 2008, Hofmeijer combined her roles as a vascular neurologist at Rijnstate Hospital with a research and teaching position at the University of Twente. She was appointed a Full Professor in Translational Neurophysiology in 2019. Her research primarily investigates the effects of ischemia on the brain, particularly in patients with brain infarction and cardiac arrest, addressing significant causes of global disability. Alongside acute reperfusion therapies, Hofmeijer’s work promotes cerebral recovery through innovative diagnostic and treatment developments. She believes that systematic patient observation paired with targeted experimentation can yield valuable pathophysiological insights to aid in treatment advancements. Research initiatives include clinical EEG registrations combined with experimental studies to examine synaptic failure as a crucial mechanism in ischemic conditions. Currently, Hofmeijer leads the Dutch-Belgian TELSTAR consortium, overseeing multicenter clinical trials aimed at testing new treatments for comatose patients after cardiac arrest.
