Biography

Jeannine Hess is a Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry and a Group Leader at the Francis Crick Institute. Jeannine obtained her PhD from the University of Zurich in 2016 under the supervision of Professor Gilles Gasser, focusing on combating parasitic diseases. She has designed, synthesized, and evaluated a range of metal-based molecules aimed at finding cures for parasitic worm infections, which pose a significant threat to humans and livestock. Her research interests led her to secure the SNSF Early Postdoc Mobility Fellowship to join Professor Chris Abell's research group at the University of Cambridge, where she concentrated on structural guided drug design to identify cures for Tuberculosis. In 2018, she was awarded the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship to advance her projects targeting alternative antimicrobial agents through innovative fragment-based drug discovery strategies. Since 2021, Jeannine has pursued her passion for fighting infectious diseases at the Francis Crick Institute, where she leads her own research group focusing on the development of rationally designed metal-based antimicrobials. Her work integrates synthetic chemistry, biochemical and biophysical assays, microbiology, and structural biology to create transformative probes and compounds that can serve as tools for chemical biology and potential new therapeutics. Her commitment to advancing molecular design methodologies seeks to revolutionize therapeutic interventions and expand the boundaries of scientific understanding.
