Biography

Professor Kim joined the faculty of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2015 and has been a joint faculty member in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering since 2016. Prior to his appointment at MIT, he was a research staff member at IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Research Center, where he conducted research in photovoltaics, two-dimensional materials, graphene, and advanced complementary metal-oxide semiconductor devices. Professor Kim has been recognized as a Master Inventor at IBM with more than 100 patent filings in five years. His research encompasses a range of topics, including basic material physics, mechanics of electronic and photonic device systems, and next-generation electronics with a focus on 3D integration. His research group innovates in nanotechnology for computing electronics and explores neuromorphic computing and cognitive systems modeled approaches. Kim earned his Bachelor's degree from Hongik University in Seoul, South Korea, a Master's degree from Seoul National University, and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, all in materials science engineering.
