Biography

Jef D. Boeke is a Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at NYU Langone Health and a member of the National Academy of Inventors. He is the Director of the Institute of Systems Genetics, where he focuses on the mechanistic genomic aspects of retro-transposition in yeast and mammalian systems. His pioneering research explores the development of novel technologies in genetics, genomics, and synthetic biology. The Boeke lab utilizes yeast as a platform for constructing fully synthetic chromosomes and engages in both practical and theoretical studies. One of the lab’s major projects is geared towards the complete synthesis and 'debugging' of the entire genome, a project that aims to rewrite and synthesize eukaryotic organisms, specifically Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This ambitious endeavor, known as SC2.0, aims to expand our understanding of synthetic biology and genomic engineering.
