Biography

Jeff Behrends received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has taught at Illinois State University before joining Harvard University in 2016. His publications span a diverse range of ethical subfields including axiology, meta-ethics, normative ethics, applied ethics, and applied political philosophy. His current research focuses on metaethics, especially the nature of practical reasons, and applied ethics in relation to computing technology, particularly the design, development, and use of artificial intelligence. He has previously served as co-Director of Embedded EthiCS at Harvard University and as Director of the Ethics and Technology Initiatives at the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics. Additionally, he is a faculty advisor and has contributed significantly to discussions around ethics in technology.
