Jeff Bilmes joined the University of Washington Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering faculty in fall 1999. He received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1989, his S.M. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1993, and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1999. He is a member of the International Computer Science Institute in Berkeley, CA. He has authored over 100 journal and conference papers on topics that include speech, language, statistical machine learning, human-computer interfaces, bioinformatics, pattern recognition, parallel programming, and high-performance software coding techniques. He also serves as an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Washington. His research interests include statistical modeling, combinatorial optimization, signal processing, pattern classification, speech recognition, language processing, and biological signal processing. He has a particular focus on speech-based human-computer interfaces and is known for his work on the vocal joystick system, which enables speech-based continuous control. Additionally, he is interested in high-performance computing systems, submodularity in machine learning, and techniques for reducing power consumption in computer architecture.
