Biography

Jeff Hasty is a Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of California, San Diego, within the Jacobs School of Engineering. His research focuses on computational genomics and the dynamics of gene regulatory networks that control cell function. Hasty engineers synthetic gene networks to gain insights into general modules of gene regulation, including subnetworks that function as switches and oscillators, and networks that facilitate communication among populations of cells. His work offers frameworks for predicting and evaluating gene regulatory motifs that govern protein production at the genomic level. Hasty develops and utilizes mathematical models to analyze gene networks and employs experimental techniques to construct networks based on these models. An example includes developing a model of a positive feedback loop where a gene produces a protein that in turn activates the gene itself. His contributions have been recognized in popular press outlets such as CNN and Business Week. Before joining UCSD in 2002, Hasty served as an Assistant Research Professor at the Biomedical Engineering Department at Boston University. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from Georgia Tech in 1997 and has been a post-doctoral fellow at the Supercomputing Research Institute at Florida State University. His research in gene networks is supported by DARPA, NSF, and the Fetzer Institute.
