Biography

Jeff Orchard is an Associate Professor at the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo, where he directs the Neurocognitive Computing Lab. His research interests lie at the intersection of neuroscience and computer science, focusing on understanding the neural mechanisms that govern behavior. His work encompasses areas such as image processing and medical imaging, with a particular emphasis on computational experiments and mathematical analyses aimed at deciphering the neurological foundations of perception, cognition, and behavior. Orchard's ultimate aim is to uncover simple mechanistic rules that explain the complex nature of brain functions and cognitive behaviors, akin to the theory of evolution. He received his Bachelor of Mathematics degree in 1994 from the University of Waterloo, followed by a Master of Science degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of British Columbia in 1996, and a PhD in Computing Science from Simon Fraser University in 2003.
