Biography

Jeff Sahadeo received his PhD from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 2000. He joined Carleton University after years teaching at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. His teaching interests include diaspora, migration, and empire, focusing particularly on Eastern Europe and Asia. A specialist in Caucasus and Central Asia, Dr. Sahadeo has conducted extensive work in countries of the region. His current research centers on the intersection of nature and society, social movement, and change, with a study of rivers in the Republic of Georgia. He is also researching post-conflict peacebuilding and pluralism in Eurasia. Some of his selected publications include "Voices on the Soviet Edge: Southern Migrants in Leningrad and Moscow" (Cornell University Press, 2019), which won the Canadian Association of Slavists/ Taylor Francis Book Prize in 2020, and various contributions in academic journals and edited volumes exploring themes of history, memory, migration, and racial dynamics during the late Soviet period.
